New Multi-Genre Novella Imprint Focuses on the Dark Fiction of Emerging Authors
Celebrating Work by the Ascending Voices of Modern Fiction
CHICAGO, January 11, 2022 —The year 2022 marks one decade of independent publishing for Grey Matter Press. To coincide with this anniversary, the Chicago-based publisher today announced the launch of its inaugural line of fiction titles that will feature the work of debut and emerging authors. The company’s Emergent Expressions Signature Series imprint of dark fiction titles will annually publish a selection of genre novellas by authors who represent the ascending voices of modern fiction.
Known for the array of dark fiction volumes released during its first ten years, Grey Matter Press (GMP) expands on that tradition for its decennial anniversary with the introduction of its Emergent Expressions imprint, a multi-discipline selection of novellas highlighting titles by new and upcoming authors writing in the thriller, horror, science fiction, crime/noir, speculative fiction, fantasy and other dark genres.
“Our Emergent Expressions imprint is intended to give rise to authors by offering a viable, collaborative and professional publishing venue for their ascendant voices,” said Anthony Rivera, GMP editor and publisher. “It’s my goal to help advance the careers of these writers by spotlighting their talents and generating greater awareness for their work under the banner of Grey Matter Press.”
Emergent Expressions selections for the 2022 calendar year include four novellas from a group of international authors writing in four individual literary categories, including one title each from the speculative fiction, dark fantasy, horror, and thriller genres. The first volume in the line is slated for release early this spring, and official announcement of this year’s complete line-up is coming soon.
“The first titles in the Emergent Expressions line truly represent our intent for the imprint, which is to embrace the original essence of GMP when we launched the press ten years ago to give voice to new, diverse, and emerging authors seeking a professional venue committed to showcasing their work,” Rivera said, referring to the company’s release in 2013 of its first four anthologies that featured the work of many first-time authors, including the press’ debut volume that garnered its initial Bram Stoker Award nomination.
“It’s been quite edifying to partner with these four authors whose diverse voices kick off the imprint by bringing something new to the literary table through their individual styles. I look forward to releasing their books and exposing them to an audience I expect will become long-time readers of their work,” he continued.
Volumes in the Emergent Expressions line will be co-branded as both Grey Matter Press titles, featuring the company’s recognizable circular “G” brand identity, and will also include specific design elements distinguishing each as a selection in the Emergent Expressions Signature Series.
All titles in the line will be visually linked by utilizing consistent Emergent Expressions branding and a unique design theory for the imprint. Branded cover artwork will designate each volume’s genre category membership via the use of color-coded, genre-specific design elements. Book interiors will leverage these details with internal embellishments to communicate the design theory throughout.
As with all titles published by GMP, volumes in the Emergent Expressions line will be released in both electronic and paperback versions with availability worldwide.
Next month in February, the press plans to announce an open call seeking manuscript submissions for Emergent Expressions titles that will publish in 2023.
