Dark Cli-Fi Thriller is Now Available From Emergent Expressions

The Day of the Lepus

Speculative Fiction Novella by Amanda Kool Arrives to Reader Fanfare

The Day of the Lepus is Here as Resembling Lepus Lands Worldwide

CHICAGO, April 26, 2022 — The tautly written, multi-layered crime mystery set in a post-dystopian urban United Kingdom after Earth’s sixth mass extinction, Resembling Lepus by Australian author Amanda Kool, arrived today with widespread support from industry influencers and dark fiction readers. Resembling Lepus is the debut dark speculative fiction novella by Kool and the inaugural release of the Emergent Expressions imprint from Grey Matter Press (GMP).

Kool paints a society wherein survivors who have struggled with unhealthy air, food rations and regimented energy consumption are now faced with an all-new respect for life. This central concept of the novella poses difficult new challenges when a detective leading an investigation into a string of inconceivable—and potentially even unconventional, per current standards—murders that have rocked her city.

Reviewer Tony Jones of the UK’s Ginger Nuts of Horror says of Resembling Lepus: “Down the years, the strength of GMP has been its ability to effortlessly move between the boundaries of dark fiction, encompassing thriller, horror, science fiction, crime/noir, horror, speculative fiction and fantasy. It looks like this new series is going to continue this tradition and in a nutshell, it is always worth keeping a keen eye on what they publish.”

Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of The Fearing, John FD Taff, says of the novella: “Kool’s Resembling Lepus intermingles identity, human nature, and a reverence for all life in a murder mystery that says more about the systems humans put into place to define what ‘life’ or ‘murder’ is.  Cool, deeply imagined speculative fiction.”

Resembling Lepus is the first of four titles to be published by GMP during the 2022 calendar year in its Emergent Expressions line that features genre novellas by ascending voices of modern fiction writing in the thriller, horror, science fiction, crime/noir, horror, speculative fiction, fantasy and other dark genres.

“The first book in the new GMP range Emergent Expressions is a strange one, and although post-apocalyptic stories continue to be released at pace, the manner in which Resembling Lepus was framed was both original and quirky. The cli-fi vibe was reminiscent of the cult 1970s Silent Running, but with the last surviving animals being revered in the same way Bruce Dern cultivated his plants in that film, continued Jones.

“Amanda Kool’s Resembling Lepus is our first stand-alone, long-format speculative fiction title in our ten-year history, and because of that it’s the perfect novella to kick off Emergent Expressions,” said Anthony Rivera, editor and publisher at GMP. “Kool’s impressive imagination, remarkable world-building and straightforward approach to complex storytelling combine to create an evocative and captivating tale in this cli-fi dark thriller that investigates the repercussions of man playing god.”

The imprint seeks to elevate the fiction of emerging authors by offering a viable, collaborative and professional publishing outlet committed to highlighting exceptional talent and generating greater awareness for their work under the banner of Grey Matter Press.

Additional volumes in the Emergent Expressions Series 2022 include the recently announced psychological thriller The Dark Matter of Natasha by award-winning author Matthew R. Davis that drops on June 21st, the dark urban fantasy of Garganutana’s Ghost by Patrick Barb slated for August, and the horror of Cassandra’s Typewriter by Andrew McRae to arrive in October.
